本詩歌是作者 Dorsey(黑人福音詩歌之父）在妻子難產去世及嬰兒後來夭折，心碎欲絕深陷痛苦中寫出來的。這首詩後來被翻譯成32種語言。
1932年的某一天，当他在密苏里州圣路易市参加奋兴会时，得知妻子难产而突然去世的消息，紧接着他的儿子也夭折了，这样双重的致命打击立刻使他陷入了极度的伤痛之中，他无法接受这个残酷的事实，然而最终，他在与上帝的“摔跤”中得到了安慰，他坐在琴旁弹出了这首《亲爱主，牵我手》。
